The 1st Coastal Division, a Syrian Opposition faction formed in October 22, 2014 in North Latakia, as it is currently the most powerful armed faction in the area.
The 1st Coastal Division is led by Cpt. Mohamed Haj Ali, a Syrian Army defected officer. The faction lost its top military commander, Cpt. Basel Zamu, in Russian airstrikes in North Latakia.
The faction in active in North Latakia (Jabal al-Turkman and Jabal al-Akrad) and North West of Hama (Ghab Plain), with a size of more than 1900 fighters, including many soldiers defected from the Syrian Army during the war.
